‘Nolan’s Epiphany’ 130 x 120cm, Oil on canvas. ‘Nolan’s Epiphany’ was inspired by a visit to the Tweed Regional gallery’s exhibition of Sidney Nolans Ned Kelly Gang paintings. I am a curious painter. I like to explore the nature in which images surface upon the canvas. If I have placed my self in the correct environment I could be guided by instinct into the unknown. It is in this unknown that ideas are birthed into reality. I like to consider these moments of conception that other artists have experienced, the precise moment the lightning strikes and the idea feels apparent and potent. For this painting I was considering the moment Nolan conceived the idea for the Ned Kelly gang Paintings. ⚡️

Last days to see “The Conspiracy Makers” at the BSA Project Space @byronschoolofart Annexe which finishes Thursday 8 August. The exhibition will be open today and tomorrow from 10am - 3pm.
“For me, each painting is a dialogue between the canvas and me, a conversation that evolves with every layer of paint. The process is intuitive, driven by an inner impulse rather than a preconceived idea.
The title work for this exhibition ‘The Conspiracy Makers’ delves into the enigmatic nature of those who craft conspiracy theories. These figures are like phantoms, unseen architects of intricate narratives that influence the collective consciousness. Through shadowy imagery, I explore the idea that conspiracy makers operate from the shadows, manipulating perceptions without revealing themselves. ‘The Conspiracy Makers’ invites viewers to question the sources behind the narratives they encounter and reflect on the power and danger of these invisible influencers.
My paintings are a reflection of the spontaneous and each piece is a unique expression of the journey rather than the destination. It invites viewers to experience the raw, unfiltered essence of creativity, to see the art not as a finished product but as a living, breathing entity that continues to evolve with each gaze.” Caleb Reid
Upcoming Exhibition. Event: 5-8pm 24/7/24 Byron Bay Community Arts College - ARTS HUB 6/8 Burringbar St, Mullumbimby NSW
On the 24th of July 2024, artist Caleb Reid will be bringing an exciting new body of drawings to the new Byron Bay Community College Arts Hub.
Marking the first exhibition for the Community College’s new gallery space, Caleb will be exhibiting a vibrant new direction of Automatic drawings.
Playful in their nature, these drawings are a collection of innocent ideas. Colourful compositions of characters, symbols, shapes and emotive marks. Made in quick succession, using the full range of the colour spectrum, Caleb has created drawings in a mode of working that the surrealists coined as Automatism. An idea popularised in the 1920’s by Surrealists artists Andre` Masson and Hans Arp. Automatism is a method of art-making in which the artist suppresses conscious control over the making process, allowing the unconscious mind to have great sway.
Working in this free-style mode of expression, Caleb has created pictures that form stories somewhat of their own accord. In contrast to Reid’s dark and emotive paintings, these drawings defy the notion of personal style and showcase a versatility to the artists scope of visual expression. @byroncollege #automatism #calebreid #drawing #byroncommunitycollege #artshub
