Over the course of the current semester in Typography, we've been tasked to redesign 50 album covers using the type as the primary content. These 4.5"x4.5" compositions are in grayscale, and (typically)includes the album and artist name, as well as the track titles and times. Adlai Stevenson understood something about our world; this earth is all we have. In his last address to the United Nations just prior to his death in 1965, he encouraged his fellow man to give each other and the world around them a little more consideration.
โWe travel together, passengers on a little spaceship, dependent on its vulnerable
reserves of air and soilโฆpreserved from annihilation only by the care we give our fragile
craft.โ
His words fell on deaf ears. The United States has continued to abuse and expand, taking for granted the โmundaneโ, natural beauties of the world. This is a reiteration; Stevensonโs words begin to take on a greater power through the lens of our alternative.

For the publication design project, I was drawn by this depiction of time and the way that Paglen speaks on the manipulation of time. Using the futuristic but modern space age feel of the era, I took that feeling as a jumping point for starting my design, selecting only sans-serif fonts that felt cohesive with the era. Along with that, I chose images that felt in line with this idea of advancement for the time; considering the space race, the rise of technology, and the advent of nuclear energy. Something about that time felt like it was a crossroad tapping into something new, and the images given reflect that. They imply advancement but retain an analog feeling. The other reason why the black background with white text was chosen was so the pamphlet overall had more a space based feel. The white text on black background lending itself to this idea of stars and the cosmos.

Initially taken as details for another photography project, these images are a partial collection that reflect the physical items they hold. Safely tucked away for me to find later. My name specifically takes center stage here, as it's something that oddly holds a lot of power over me. It can be seen throughout the pieces, which consist of things given or made to me, or otherwise saved for sentimental value.
