👋🏼 Hiii it’s Trans Awareness Week! I wrote this poem seven years ago, as I was beginning to grapple with my identity as trans and non-binary. 🥹🏳️‍⚧️ In a political landscape that seeks to eradicate our existence, this piece is about just how alive we are in between and far beyond two categories that seek to constrain and control us (aka the gender binary, oof). It addresses some of the challenges I’ve faced living in the truth of my gender and life, and despite the progress we have made since I first came out, it’s heartbreaking how relevant these issues still are. Beyond bathrooms, beyond gender markers, beyond all of this, life’s greatest challenge is for us to truly see each other’s humanity—loving liberation. 🚨🏳️‍⚧️ I was ducking the headlines for a bit in pursuit of peace, but I’m now disturbed (though not surprised) at a new White House document that officially classifies trans people and “pro-trans ideology” as an anti-American threat to be neutralized. While long-held in our intuition and nightmares, the government has now ~officially~ declared, “In addition to cartels and Islamist terror groups, our national CT activities will also prioritize the rapid identification and neutralization of violent secular political groups whose ideology is anti-American, radically pro-transgender, and anarchist. We will use all the tools constitutionally available to us to map them at home, identify their membership, map their ties to international organizations like Antifa, and use law enforcement tools to cripple them operationally before they can maim or kill the innocent. We will do the same with the state sponsors of such groups and those governments undertaking lethal plots on U.S. soil or against Americans anywhere.” Though it is unclear how exactly this strategy will be enforced, there’s much to fear with the close-knit ties between big tech and the government, and the lack of privacy and protection of our personal data and records. In addition, the U.S. Department of Justice has advanced its investigation of gender-affirming care for minors by issuing civil and criminal subpoenas to hospitals and clinics throughout the nation. Remember that hatred is coerced out of you. You can choose to love others and fight back instead. This day reminded me why I run (again). Woke up early to get to the start line at 5am for Lee’s leg of the relay. Spent the whole day with the crew as we ran through the Headlands and out and back on the Bolinas ridge, passing the baton until it was my turn to hop in just before 3pm. What a beautiful planet we get to live and play on!! How necessary it feels to remember this!! All of the different hues of green. Wow. I ripped down the mountain listening to my fifth grade playlist, including this song, just remembering how early of a love of mine running is. I shot across the finish line to immediately find myself in the arms of SO many people I love, smiling faces everywhere. What an incredible community that holds up this sport.
