Penang has always had soul. But coming back after years, I felt it again—in more layers. A reminder of what it is. We didn’t chase a food list. Just ate wherever felt right— and somehow, that’s when Penang shows up best every plate of local delight feels like the city itself. Unique, and full of human touch. A cup of Dirty at Noma Bar, with a pudding on the side, random local stops in between… What surprised me more was everything around it. The vintage scene here has quietly grown into something real. From Fujiyama, spread across different shops in the city—each with its own personality— to @greatworn_ , a local store that curates vintage Americana so well, and seeing Penang homeboys @tunway @shawnduabui return to build something like @604giftshop — that says a lot about the city. Then you start noticing the smaller details. A vinyl bar tucked inside Hotel Mokozoyo. Catching @dannny.lim first solo exhibition back home at Hin Bus Depot— a Penang boy who left to pursue photography in New York— But the moment that stayed with me most— was at @cakoi_166 A young second-generation maker continues the craft— serving fried dough while opening the space to local artist pop-ups like @tep.york That contrast… felt like Penang in one frame. Penang doesn’t shout. But it shines. I’ll be back for more 🫶🏽 - @chooee
