On the muggy days, the days when the air is wet with sweat and piss, I wonder if the sad I’d be without this place would be worse than the sad I am in it. They’re not the same, like how emotional tears are chemically different than reflexive ones. The thought of leaving makes me flinch. I think about the deli that I frequent less than the wine shop a block further down, the electric Citi bikes that charge $5 to unlock, the roads down midtown that end in the dusk, the parties, the people hugging on the corner and releasing with a kiss, the promise that everything outside of New York might be falling apart but we’ve been here in the debris, making it look chic, forever, so we’ll be okay, and it’s true, there’s no place like our heavy metal on rough bedrock, but I think I’m more folk than rock these days and I can’t help but wonder what wind hitting leaves sounds like in an environment that still remembers that that’s what this was all supposed to be.
