#throwback to my time working with the incredible Imaginary Forces NY crew. This was a series of social promos for the "Stories Like No Other" Brand Campaign for HBO. This was a lot of fun to work on, especially creating the fake "height maps" that were used to distort the characters. Big shout-out to Jeremy Cox, @maxstrizich , @austin.marola , and @henrythechang for the original creative design! #tbt #throwbackthursday #animation #3danimation #motiongraphics #mograph #c4d #cinema4d #octanerender

#throwback to my time with the amazing Imaginary Forces NY crew. This was the opening video for the Clash Royale League 2018 World Finals, featuring a digital takeover of Shibuya in Tokyo, Japan. The task here was to replace as many of the digital billboards in the area with content showcasing Clash Royale and its 6 Final teams. Shout-out to the team that helped make this, including @austin.marola , Manu Gaulot, and Herculano Fernandes! #tbt #throwbackthursday #animation #compositing #motiongraphics #aftereffects

#throwback to my time with the wonderful Imaginary Forces NY crew. These were a pair of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation videos to help visually communicate their global initiatives across a variety of campaigns and platforms. These were a lot of fun to work on, and a shout-out to the team that worked on this, including @austin.marola , @maxstrizich , @henrythechang , @nathangoodell , and @ericstrange ! #tbt #throwbackthursday #animation #3danimation #motiongraphics #mograph #c4d #cinema4d #octanerender

#throwback to just last year, when I helped the StayTuned team at NBC News on this incredible documentary about the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. I helped animate these beautiful designs by @mikebasilico , guided by @bplimpton and @tpnello . You can watch the documentary here: /news/nbcblk/tulsa-race-massacre-100-years-later-why-it-happened-why-n1268877

#throwback to working at NBC News in 2019. Here's a sampling of graphic animations I worked on during that time, mostly focused on line graphs, bar charts, pie charts, and maps, all of which were made dynamically, for quick ease-of-use in later projects and by different artists. #tbt #throwbackthursday #motiongraphics #animation #aftereffects #newsgraphics #NBCNews #NBCNewsNow

#throwback to working on these graphics templates for NBC News Now in 2019. The templates were already fully designed, but I had to animate them and create the functions by which they could be made into templates. The templates had to be highly customizable, but also very user-friendly and easy to tweak. Since many of the templates were heavily text-based, I relied on writing a lot of custom expressions that measured character and words counts, measured line lengths, and adjusted text on the fly accordingly, including inserting paragraph spacing where necessary. It was very complex, and I'm proud of how well it all worked. One of the more interesting puzzles I had to figure out, was how to highlight text in the Social Post template. I settled on using the carrot (^) symbol to represent the beginning and end of highlighted passages, and then creating a custom font of just square boxes that matched the character widths of the visible font. With these two fonts overlaid on top of each other, I could reveal the square boxes font as an X-Scale and X-Position animation that would look like highlighting text, and it was completely dynamic! #tbt #throwbackthursday #motiongraphics #animation #aftereffects #textanimation #newsgraphics #NBCNews #NBCNewsNow #expressions

#tbt to this fun project for Johnson&Johnson, featuring really cute designs and animations for a social app. The designs were made by another team member, and then I animated them. I really enjoyed making these because of all the little details and small animations I could add to bring the scenes to life. I animated these at 60fps, so they should play nice and smooth. My personal favorites were the Halloween and Sledding animations. #tbt #throwbackthursday #motiongraphics #animation #aftereffects #vectoranimation

Big #throwback to when I owned and operated an internet radio station called Arecibo Radio, catering to video-game-music, chiptunes, and related music and culture. The station had many weekly shows as well as special listening parties for albums on release day, in which the album's artist would be interviewed by the host in between the tracks. These listening parties drew as many as 300+ live listeners. Arecibo Radio also live-streamed many music festivals, including Pulsewave NYC, 8Static Festival, and MAGFest. As owner and operator, I also handled the concept, design, and execution of the branding and website. I'm most proud of how well the website turned out, utilizing many advanced features such as live audio streaming, modular pages, AJAX page loading, and a unique design. The station has since shut down, but it will always have a special place in my heart. #tbt #throwbackthursday #graphicdesign #webdesign #areciboradio #chiptune #vgm #videogamemusic

#throwback to these fun little animations for a series of Verizon videos. They were simple designs (created by another team member), but you could extract lots of fun details out of them through animation. My personal favorites were the rabbit jumping out of the hat, and the bear roaring at the car. #tbt #throwbackthursday #motiongraphics #animation #aftereffects #vectoranimation

#throwback to Super Bowl 50, where I designed and built the Down & Distance markers. These designs would go on to be used for the following NFL Season, and were in use for many years after. For the Super Bowl, CBS was getting a brand new graphics package, so a new Down & Distance marker needed to be made to match the new look. I went through many rounds of designs, many of them having only slight variation. Although I had to keep it relatively conservative, I did try to sneak in a few designs that were very different from the usual. Another aspect that I wanted to move away from the usual was the way it animated on. Most Down & Distance markers moved two-dimensionally, but I wanted mine to look like it was animating out from the ground. It's not a perfect perspective, due to the various positions the camera could be in, and some concessions had to be made for practical reasons, but I think the animation is effective. #tbt #throwbackthursday #motiongraphics #3danimation #animation #sportsgraphics #aftereffects #cinema4d #c4d #cbssports #superbowl #superbowl50

#throwback to 2016, creating Stat Templates for the new CBSSports NFL graphics package. There were two templates needed, a Single-Player version, and a Player Comparison. Each template had to accommodate between 3 and 5 different stats, and each stat had to have options for extra data. These templates were built in After Effects, and were made to be as simple to use as possible. I approached this functionality by using expressions to connect the various objects to simple sliders. This way the design could change dynamically to a single input, rather than requiring multiple adjustments. This dynamic approach allowed the template to be updated quickly by other artists. #tbt #throwbackthursday #motiongraphics #3danimation #animation #sportsgraphics #aftereffects #cinema4d #c4d #cbssports

#throwback to 2015-2016, working on the NFL Today Weekly Matchup graphics for CBS Sports. This was an interesting series of projects to work on, and although it was often a lot of work (and late nights), I really enjoyed it. During the regular NFL season, I was tasked to develop custom animations for their new 18-screen backwall display in the redesigned NFLToday set. Each week, myself and a producer would discuss the themes or connective tissue (if any) between the games being aired on CBS and come up with the concept from there. I would then go on to design, build, and render as quickly as possible, since I usually only had two or three days from start to finish, so it was always a race to complete! There were several unique challenges to these animations, including trying to keep it fresh every week. One interesting trick that I employed often was the use of vertical camera offsets in the 3D Animation. This allowed the center vanishing point of the camera to be lower in the frame without tilting the camera, which kept vertical lines square to the frame of the display. You can see this in action here in the Elevator, Phonebooth, LockerRoom, and Chalkboard matchups. #tbt #throwbackthursday #motiongraphics #3danimation #animation #sportsgraphics #aftereffects #cinema4d #c4d #nfltoday #cbssports
