✨ Fusion of Forms opens today at @caves.naarm !
Fusion of Forms is a series of multimedia installations that explore innovations in bilingual typography. Combining dynamic visuals with interactive elements, the project examines the fusion of two distinct typographic systems: English and Chinese. By deconstructing and integrating elements from both languages, Fusion of Forms reveals the richness of cultural interaction, demonstrates typography’s potential to transcend linguistic boundaries, and inspires new cultural narratives. The series invites audiences to reflect on their own linguistic experiences, fostering dialogue and promoting deeper understanding in bilingual and multicultural contexts.
Drop by, say hi, and experience the forms unfold!
📍 CAVES Gallery 🗓️ 15 May – 31 May 🕐 12–5pm, Thur–Sat

The opening night of my group exhibition, AND WORD WAS GOD(神), is today from 6 PM to 8 PM at Run Artist Run! I warmly invite you to join us and say hi anytime!
Event: Opening Night of AND WORD WAS GOD(神) Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, May 24, 2024 Location: Run Artist Run, 6 Waterside Place, Docklands, Victoria
A collaboration between three first-generation Chinese Australians working in video art, poetry and typography design, And the word was God (神) draws upon their lived experience to explore how the languages they speak are used, exchanged and transformed across time. Through the sympathy between three modalities of practice, this exhibition discovers dynamic connections between the past, present and future of language exchange in Australia.
Caesar Li knows fonts matter.
It’s not just what you see but how you see it – right down to the font.
For Melbourne Art Book Fair, artist @caesarxinyuan ’s three-channel video work ‘ORIENT & REORIENT’ shines a light on the ‘chop suey’ style of letterforms – often found on materials that aim to create a visual impression of something 'Chinese', like fortune cookie packaging – and the impact of imitating ‘Chineseness’ without authentic connection to the place or culture.
We caught up with the artist in Melbourne’s Chinatown for a chat about his work and where he finds inspiration.
Come and see ORIENT & REORIENT on display at NGV International, all weekend – free.
👏 Over to you, Caesar!
Excited to be invited by @award360 to give a talk for Mandarin-speaking audiences next Thursday 🏄♂️
I’ll be sharing my recent award-winning project Fusion of Forms — honoured as Best Experiments of the Year 🌿

I’m very excited to share that my article has been published in RMIT Design Archives Journal, Vol. 15, No. 2. 📖✨ @rmitdesignarchives
This issue explores “Multinational Design”, looking into how colonial histories, migration, diplomacy and global economies shape designers, their practices and the communities they work with.
As part of my ongoing PhD research, this article traces the evolution of chop-suey-like typefaces in nineteenth-century colonial Victoria, considering typography as a cultural form that reflects historical, social, political and cultural dynamics for the Chinese-Australian community.
Many thanks to Dr. Stephen Banham @letterboxtype for the wonderful design, and to RMIT Design Archives Journal Team, including Ann Carew, for the generous support and coordination.
Lastly, huge thanks to Dr. Noel Waite @noelnsaid and Dr. Fayen d’Evie @fkxde for their guidance and support throughout my PhD. 🙏✨

ACCA is delighted to present the first Australian solo exhibition of revered American contemporary artist Tschabalala Self. With new and recent large-scale paintings and works on paper and an immersive 3-channel video installation. Skin Tight introduces Australian audiences to a practice celebrated for its beauty and sophistication. Self’s distinctive style combines fabric, collage, and painting with avant-garde printing techniques, making her one of the most in-demand figurative painters working today. In recent years, Self has become increasingly steadfast in her exploration of beauty – something she views as a form of artistic resistance.

ah ah ah art! is excited to offer a Chinese Language Tour for CHRISTOPHE STIBIO: TRUE MORNINGS, NEVER REAL, ensuring language is no longer a barrier to experiencing these fascinating artworks. Join us for this amazing exhibition and fully immerse yourself in the experience.
True Mornings, Never Real brings forward a new space of beauty and freedom while investigating further the Australian landscape as a starting point. Christophe Stibio’s new body of works immerses us in the vaporous atmosphere of the early moments of the day, a transience where his profound observation exposes the infinite facets and realities of the land. He masterfully deals with the truest paradox - capturing the ephemeral, while revealing the fleeting nuances of an inimitable nature.
As he builds up bridges between the invisibilities in nature and the mind of the viewer who perceives them as present, he shifts (like Nature’s endless changes) absence to presence. As a result, one’s mind is left free to take over and lead the way on its own, experiencing the true substance of the land as a living, commanding, yet fragile entity.
Christophe Stibio

Join us in the gallery with ah ah ah art! Chinese art club for insights into ACCA’s current exhibition Five Acts of Love in Mandarin Chinese.
The assembled works offer love as loss, and as conversations about grief and yearning. Love is also presented as memory and memorialisation. Resistance and revolution are reimagined through the earth and continued connection to it, whilst intimacy is presented within the gentleness of familial gatherings, and the company of comrades. Love is also present in the emotional register that tunes into the spiritual, and the complete letting go that encompasses love of the Divine.
Reflecting upon the words of the great Muslim scholar and poet Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī, to love is to risk everything.
