Caerphilly CBC is working in partnership with many groups and organisations to offer a range of activities for the National Year of Reading 2026!
We are asking children and families to make a zine, individually or together. A zine is an 8 page story book that can be easily made from one sheet of A4 paper. This video will show you how to make your zine.

The aim is to make a display at the Tredomen Council Offices with hundreds of zines made by people of all ages (the cut off is Friday May 15th for the display). You can send your zines in, deliver them or ask for them to be collected.

This powerful documentary film takes us on a journey from the South Wales Valleys’ coal-fired past to a future driven by change and possibility. 2025 marked the 40th anniversary of the end of the 1984-85 miners strike and the 30th anniversary of the reopening of Tower Colliery, the UK’s first worker-owned coal mine. One marked the end of an era. The other sparked a vision of hope.
Shot and directed by Jeremy Clancy, who grew up in the Derbyshire coalfields and saw the extraction and damage to community first-hand, this documentary weaves the past and future into a story of renewal.
Co-produced with local people across the generations it captures the energy, frustration and fierce pride of young people determined to shape a new future. It explores the possibility of a green industrial revolution that brings jobs, resources, justice and sustainable power back to where it is most needed.
The documentary has been described as ‘more than a film’ - it is a call to action.
Each screening will be followed by a Q and A session with the cast of the documentary and a community discussion around the themes coming out of the film and next steps.
