Dreams (1990) Directed by Akira Kurosawa.
‘Dreams’ is a personal film created by Akira Kurosawa, composing of 8 shortfilms or “dreams” inspired by kurosawa’s own actual dreams, spanning from childhood to old age.
In the final dream, “Village of the Watermills,” A traveler meets a 103 year old man who lives a simple life. The traveler is taken away by how peaceful the place is.
The old man reflects on how modern people are “always in a hurry, always wanting more” inventing conveniencies that only complicate their lives, never taking a break to just appreciate life.
Many people interpret the scene as Kurosawa’s own farewell (he was 80 years old when he directed the film) - his dream of a peaceful world, untouched by the chaos that haunted his earlier dreams.
In 2002, the University of Oregon, in collaboration with Nike, introduced a new mascot named “Mandrake.” This futuristic, spandex-clad duck was designed to be a more aggressive and modern representation of the school’s spirit, aiming to appeal to a younger audience and provide the university with a mascot free from the licensing constraints associated with their traditional Donald Duck-inspired mascot . Mandrake made his debut at athletic events, performing acrobatics and engaging with fans in a manner distinct from the beloved “Puddles”.
Despite the creative approach, Mandrake was met with criticism and mockery from students and fans, earning nicknames like “RoboDuck” and “Duck Vader” due to his unconventional appearance . The new mascot failed to resonate with the university community, leading to his quiet retirement after just one season. The original mascot, Puddles, continued to represent the University of Oregon, maintaining his status as a cherished symbol of school pride.
