Nellie Sargent Johnson (1887-1951) began publishing on the craft of handweaving, here in Detroit, in 1929. She taught weaving at @waynestate from the mid-1930s until her death in 1951. I uplift her work and legacy in an interview with @clearlinezine issue 006. #nelliesargentjohnson #handweaving detroithandweaver

@periodicals__shop hit it again!!! OMG…Sociotype Journal is taking me down another rabbit hole. The articles are food for my soul. I thought about and considered the circle as a design element in urban planning and architecture when I created “Maru.” “Maru” is constructed of a map of central Tokyo woven with a collage built of circular elements. It’s refreshing to read material that affirms and expands my thinking in the studio. I’m so thankful @periodicals__shop is here!

It’s nice to visit the Mildred Thompson sculpture I donated to the NMWA @womeninthearts several years ago. I’m thrilled it’s installed next to a work by one of my favorite painters, Remedios Varo. The renovation of the museum is absolutely beautiful. @mildredthompsonart

I’m a proud graduate of California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, and I mourn the loss of my beloved school. I’m glad I made CCAC my choice. Thank you, Gertrude, for answering the phone….#CCAC #CCA @ccatextiles @oakland.life @cacollegeofarts

@periodicals__shop suggested for me to check out “Diagrams of Power,” which profoundly changed my thinking in the studio. The volume sent me down a rabbit hole to “Mapping the Unmappable?” So now, I’m questioning how space is defined and for who. If one’s not on the map, does one exist? Is this what gerrymandering is all about? #timeandspace #weavingcollage 1. “The UpNorth-South,” 2023-maps of Flint, Michigan and Birmingham, Alabama woven together. Black labor powered the auto factories and steel mills. How is this illustrated on a map? #buickcity #bessermeralabama 2. “Matthew and Melissa,” 2025-the power of the storm needs no contemporary map…the eye of the storm goes where it desires and where energy strengthens its life. The eye follows an ancient map that’s etched in time. #12thnamedstorm

“Crossroads” opens this week at the Muskegon Museum of Art. Thank you to the curators and museum staff for organizing this project! I’m thrilled to have work in this show with dear friends and colleagues! My work, “Valentine,” is a large textile that represents textile construction techniques I learned from family members, who are now my ancestors. They were very clear….the act of making was/is a road to mental freedom and clarity in this place called America. Photo credit: Tim Thayer. @muskegonartmuseum

Thank you @douglasjonesartdesign for inviting me to participate in your curatorial project, Water. The work in the show is fabulous and the installation presents the art so well. I’m thrilled to have my collage installed next to a painting by @shirleywoodsonartist . Come to @norwestgallery to check out the show now through December 21.
