Carlo Giovanni Bernyak (Milano, 1993) lives and works in Monza, a city that, along with nearby Milan, continues to shape his gaze and photographic approach. His relationship with the camera began early, at five years old, trusted with a Kodak film compact to take a portrait of his parents at a mountain lodge. Since then, photography has become both a language and a method of exploration.
Rooted in a background in art school and an architecture degree from Politecnico di Milano, Carlo’s practice focuses on space as something living, never static. In this scenography, human presence and natural forces leave traces, subtle or bold. From childhood fascination with postcard racks to the influence of Gabriele Basilico, his work has always observed landscape through a quiet, analytical lens.
His series Hotels was shot between 2020 and 2021, during a moment when the world resumed in fits and starts. In a suspended Milan, these luxury hotels appeared as inert fragments of the urban puzzle, still standing, yet dimmed in purpose, like their fading signs.
