Student-teacher: a great gift to be back with my teacher once again. The student-teacher relationship is like none other - for me it is a source of guidance, inspiration, direction and power. And it’s one I’m happy to say I can continue to benefit from, even over 20 years into it. #repost @danaherjohn ・・・ Pajama party: Filming my latest video in Boston with the inestimable Brian Glick @bzglick my long suffering student from NYC days and a true jiu jitsu treasure. We are filming video on Jiu jitsu for older and less athletic players - I feel like this is one thing I am truly qualified to teach because I’m an old cripple! 😂😂 Nothing makes me happier as a coach than seeing an older or less athletic student taking on a much younger or athletically gifted opponent in the dojo and giving him hell - that’s when you really see the magic of jiu jitsu!

Ongoing lessons: very grateful to be back in Austin with my teacher @danaherjohn and these incredible friends and training partners. When we’re together I’m reminded that one ongoing lesson of jiu-jitsu is that there will be ongoing lessons. You’re never done, even when you feel like you know how to lock up the triangle or enter ashi-garami or control the back. It can seem intimidating to feel that nothing you do will ever be complete, but plenty of fields include similar expectations: surgeons, academics and motorcycle mechanics are expected to keep studying for their entire careers. In many cases it’s a requirement - in order to maintain your license or justify your position, you have to continue your professional development. Rather than viewing this as a burden, you can see it as a unique opportunity and a chance to continually explore the field that training has to offer. You can go as deep as you like on subjects that interest you, with everything from gi to no-gi and from one position or series to another. There are plenty of people who act as if their course of study ended long ago - that more training and learning isn’t just unnecessary, it’s a burden and a distraction. I see it as the opposite. Not only is it necessary and important, it’s also a gift 🙏🏼 @nicholasmeregali @garrytonon @gordonlovesjiujitsu @tazagarami @shoyoroll

In guard passing it often takes two or three passes in sequence to get past the guard of a strong, resisting person. Being ready to adjust - from over-under to scoop passing to arm-weaving - lets you maintain a clear direction and stay in close range while still taking into account posts, frames, pommeling, hip escapes and the other forms of retention they'll throw at you. Your ability to adapt and respond in the moment keeps forward momentum, prevents a hard reset and lets you maintain your connection and pressure even when there's resistance. @manto.original #bjj #jiujitsu #grappling #martialarts

Ashiwaza: from simple linear de-ashi attacks to complex combos and directional changes, foot sweep variations are the most elegant and satisfying in the judo canon. They cost you very little - your first attack may fail, but that failure will always give you insight into your partner's reactions and responses. Once you learn their reactions, you become like a fortune-teller: you can predict what will come next. Then chaining your attacks together will become more natural, efficient and effective. #judo #jiujitsu #bjj #martialarts

Compact guards are difficult to pass because there's little room to break through frames and connections. Begin with a single, simple objective - turning their feet away from you - and the process becomes easier. The rounded posture that keeps the guard compact also makes it easier to spin someone and over-rotate them, which allows you to claim a better angle from which to work. Grip, movement and angle. @manto_original @5fifty5bjj #jiujitsu #bjj #grappling #martialarts

Do less! A great lesson I took from @judoshintaronyc . When you apply steady tension to your partner through grips, you nearly always get a reaction in the opposite direction. Instead of a big followup, you can just release the tension and let them push their way into you. That's the kuzushi you were looking for all along. Follow with tai otoshi, uchimata or any forward throw you like. #judo #jiujitsu #bjj #grappling

Whenever you use the guard to get beneath the hips, the back/leg exposure dilemma is not far away. whatever leg entanglement you're using - dlr, reverse dlr, a bolo variation or some form of ashi/xguard -you can find chances to threaten first one vulnerability and then the other. This reverse de la riva variation puts you inside the knees and underneath for the back, but then allows you to roll outside to chase the extended leg as a followup. Moving from inside to outside, from one hip to the other, from one shoulder to the other, develops fluidity, dexterity and creativity in your attacks, no matter your level. (More of this on my under pressure/leg entanglements video with @bjj.fanatics - link is in bio). #jiujitsu #bjj #martialarts #grappling
