new artwork for @thisamerlife recent episode, ‘Blackout’. Since the war began in Iran, we’ve heard very little from people inside the country — and there’s a reason for that. The entire country has been under an internet blackout. TAL worked with reporters Roxana Saberi and Fatemeh Jamalpour to get voice memos out of the country. Even though it was dangerous and difficult, people wanted to be heard. thank you to AD Julie Whitaker and the amazing folks at at This American Life for their reporting 💙 #thisamericanlife

reimagined book cover llustration of book two of the Neapolitan series by Elena Ferrante - The Story of a New Name. my favorite of the series by far. this is a little project i’ve given myself to redesign the series book covers and give them some much needed love. for book 2, i wanted to capture the summer feeling of ischia island as well as the nostalgic sense of summertime as a teenager… and ofc…. a bit of a iykyk wink. onto illustration book 3! #mybrilliantfriend #elenaferrante #neapolitanseries 💙

reimagined covers of My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante 💙 i’ve been inhaling the Neapolitan novels the last 2 months (on book 4 as we speak!) and i truly think my delay in reading these masterpieces is how much i didn’t like the covers. i know that’s bad but i dooooo judge books by their covers (sry). after becoming obsessed with the world Ferrante built, i gave myself the task to reimagining them (books 2-4 pending) and attempted to capture the spirit and magic they inhabit. which is your fav ?! ciao !! xo #mybrilliantfriend #bookcover

I love how much my last illustration resonated with so many people. It’s such a collective feeling artists have been carrying, and to put my real human hands to create a real human drawing to this feeling has been really therapeutic. So therapeutic that I looked back on the drawing and felt I wanted to make it even clearer! i drew the last version in a kind of manic haze of ai anger (lol) and so I wanted to make a second version that felt a bit clear, easier to read and resonate with. Same message, same insane illustrator behind it. Did anyone ask for this? No, but I wanted to make it! More ai anger art to come! Recycled: i’ve been thinking about the future of art & artists nonstop this year (fml), and what we lose when we use ai to generate art. other than the obvious things we lose visually and humanly, we lose a lot of hidden things too. we lose everything that comes before the work was ever even made- things that have informed us, taught us, hurt us, inspired us, healed us and on and on and on! that’s what we lose. everything behind the art. before it was ever made, there is a whole process and history that goes into art way before pen hits paper. pls hire real human artists! engage with them, buy from them! we need you and so does the world xx #fuckai #hireartistsforart #hirerealartists #fuckaiart

I wrote most of this last Spring shortly after the fires and it feels surreal to be posting it nearly a year later on a stretch of rainy days that make me so so happy. It’s been revised since originally compiled to include new information i’ve learned in the past year. 🏡 This post is a blend of info i’ve gathered through classes at @theodorepayne and the @apldgla as well as my own research. The answer to fire is not concrete + xeriscaping, just like the answer to drought is not plastic turf. We can and must do better so that our children don’t live in a paved over, plastic-blanketed world without nature. ZONE ZERO CANNOT WIN. 🏡 The full PDF version is available for free viewing + download on my website. Thank you so much to @bykellymalka for the incredible illustrations and design as always. #solisgardens
