stop being so serious and have a little fun. let yourself try things and be messy. learn from other people. COPY other people (but always give credit). paint the things you love and are intimidated by but do it in a fun way. make yourself laugh. let yourself cry. make little swatches and pick colors ahead of time. ask yourself questions and leave yourself notes. decide what you think is cool and put it in your sketchbook. choose persistence over consistency. share your work. make friends with creative people. play a murder podcast while you do it if you like murder podcasts.

well not just today, Iāve been picking away at this sketchbook spread for six days! some days I want something quick, where I can finish a spread in one day. other days I like to slow down and take my time with the brushwork and decision making. having variety in my process overall keeps things feeling fresh for me. do you have a pref between finishing a sketchbook spresd in one sitting vs taking your time and filling it over a few sessions?

the secret is there is no secret, and you just keep trying. i want to get better at painting little gouachey characters so it means painting a lot of gouachey characters, and most of them areā¦unique. the only way is through.

I ebb and flow!
sometimes Iām in a bursty phase and fill multiple spreads in a sitting.
other times weeks pass between pages.
sometimes Iām playing with paint.
other times Iām playing with fabric, my ipad (her name is maude), with the foods Iām making for dinner, with a letter Iām writing to a friend.
sometimes Iām in my sketchbook.
other times Iām working on client projects or on separate pieces of scrap paper or in my tiny field notes.
sometimes Iām making.
other times Iām not.
by taking the pressure off, my creativity flows instead of being forced. and while itās happening it doesnāt always feel like much.
and then I look back š„²
