With deepest thanks to everyone who made this exhibition possible, and a special thank you to Pam and Kenny Lester for their extraordinary generosity and belief in this work.
Grateful as well to Ella Larson for her rigorous, imaginative research—building an expansive archive that allowed these paintings to hold the nuance, specificity, and layered narrative they demanded.
SAY THEIR NAMES. To protest the murder of George Floyd, @anna__barber and I created a symbolic cemetery in Minneapolis. These gravestones honor 100 of the innumerable black lives cut short by police brutality. His murder exemplifies the systemic racism that underpins every institution in America. In order to dismantle these oppressive systems, we must hold each other accountable and be louder than ever before.
The community is organizing a candlelight vigil at the cemetery tonight at 9pm. It’s located at 711 E 37th Street, one block north of the George Floyd memorial. Please spread the word!
We will also be selling photographic prints of the installation and donating 100% of the proceeds to the @antiracismfund .
