I’ve carried the name Britton my whole life — the middle name my sisters and I share, my mom’s maiden name, and the name my kids will one day carry. Britton is a testament to what’s within me and who has come before me.
My grandfather, Rayford Britton, came to the U.S. from Colombia with unwavering faith, my beautiful grandmother, and the clothes on his back. Beyond that, all he had was the boldness to believe in his ability to create something great. And that’s exactly what he did.
He’s the reason I studied entrepreneurship. The reason I moved to Italy for fashion school. The reason I packed up my life for NYC to begin my career in fashion. But above all, he rooted a deep desire within me to eventually, when I had the boldness, or “ánimo” as he would call it, to build something of my own.
When met with the question, “What are you all dressed up for?” he’d simply smile and say, “Today.” He was no stranger to Ferragamos on a hike or a sweater vest on the soccer field. He showed me that getting dressed was more than a daily chore — it was an intentional decision to piece together your truest sense of self for an occasion as simple, yet miraculous, as today.
And today, I finally have found that ánimo to start something of my own.
