This artwork presents a powerful interpretation of the Puerto Rican flag, merging symbols of resilience and resistance. It combines elements of both the traditional flag with its baby blue, red, and white colors, and the black-and-white resistance flag, which has become a modern symbol of protest against colonialism and advocacy for Puerto Rican independence. Layers of blue paint, splattered and dripped across the flag, suggest both water and defiance, while intentional burn marks and rough textures reflect the struggles and scars Puerto Rico has endured. The overlapping colors and textures evoke a sense of conflict and persistence, representing Puerto Rico’s ongoing fight for sovereignty and self-determination. This piece is a tribute to the island’s spirit, embodying both its cultural pride and its historical resilience.
