I personally enjoy Key Biscayne today but would it have been better left as a natural island?
Key Biscayne was the center of civilization for the Tequesta, a small tribe of sea-savvy Indians who fished the crystal waters of the Florida Keys.
Because Key Biscayne is only about five feet above sea level, the Tequesta raised their villages on palm pilings, much like the summer homes that line Florida’s coasts today.
Long before sea turtles were endangered, the Tequesta hunted them for their meat and harvested their eggs for valuable protein.
In 1513, Ponce de Leon “discovered” the island and presented it to the King of Spain as Santa Maria. The Tequesta were fortunate today that Ponce only had time to restock provisions before leaving.
It wasn’t long till the Tequesta and the Spanish weren’t getting along.
During the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, many Spanish galleon laden with gold met their demise on the treacherous shoals and reefs off Key Biscayne.
Much of the treasure from these wrecks have yet to be discovered.
In 1825, after the US had acquired Florida from Spain, the Cape Florida Lighthouse was built.
An iconic landmark still intact today, the lighthouse and the surrounding area became the heart of the newly planned Town of Key Biscayne, with lots selling for $500 in 1839.
As Key Biscayne prospered, farmers from the north began arriving and setting up plantations.
The area’s beauty is renowned, and with the adventurers came the tourists. Due to its isolated subtropical habitat, Biscayne’s flora and fauna attracted naturalists like ants to candy.

There are six access points along C.R. 832 approximately one mile between each point. Three have parking (see map). The area does not have potable water. However, it provides two Port-o-Lets two miles south on Wild Cow Grade in the primitive camping area, one of which is handicapped accessible. The area is open sunrise to sunset. Fees are $1 per day for all activities or $5 per person daily for camping.

The Florida Forest Service manages the property as a state forest, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission manages scheduled hunts. The South Florida Water Management District, Florida Forest Service, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission acquired the lands.
The land is also historically significant. Sears Road, which borders the property on the north, is named after John Sears, of Sears and Roebuck, who owned a large sawmill there. He logged pine for railroad cross ties during the 1920s. By the mid-1930s, the property was cleared of most of the harvestable timber. Hunting leases and cattle operations followed. The property was logged again in the mid-1980s. Today, remnant sawdust piles from portable sawmills used over the years dot the area
