Bud burst 🌱 Tiny green shoots are pushing through the vines, marking the start of a brand new growing season at Burnt House. This is one of the most important moments in the vineyard calendar. As soil temperatures rise and daylight hours increase, the vines come out of winter dormancy and begin a new cycle of growth. Tiny buds along the canes swell and open, revealing the first green shoots of the season. At Burnt House, bud burst signals the official start of the growing year — and sets the pace for everything that follows. The timing matters: an early bud burst can increase the risk of frost damage, while a later one can shorten the ripening season. From this point on, vineyard management becomes more hands-on, with careful monitoring of weather, growth, and vine health. These fragile shoots will develop into the leaves and fruit-bearing stems that shape this year’s vintage. It’s a small but powerful reminder that every glass of wine begins with moments like this. With bud burst underway, the vineyard enters one of its most vulnerable stages. Those fresh green shoots may look resilient, but a single cold night can cause serious damage — which is why frost protection becomes a top priority at Burnt House. Cold air naturally sinks and settles in low spots, creating frost pockets across the vineyard. That’s where our Ex-Frost cold air drains come in. These systems work by actively moving that heavier cold air away from the vines, preventing it from settling and reducing the risk of frost forming around the delicate new growth. It’s a quiet but essential part of what we do — working with the landscape and using smart technology to protect the potential of this year’s vintage.
