I went to France for a few weeks last month and did quite a lot of not very much. I did manage to venture off the premises a couple of times though and took a few snaps, and these be them. Printed by me at that pantheon of light wrangling splendidness, @rapideye.darkroom
Poppy, our wonderful shaggy mess of fluff left us recently and we miss her more than anything. Rest in peace little Popps, you lovely bundle of chaos and joy. Xxx
I was watching Portrait Artist of the Year last night (as you do) and James May was one of the sitters, resplendent with his silver mane and dinky goatee beard, and it reminded me of this portrait I took of him when we were both green as green can be. It was taken to illustrate a story James was writing about the pros and cons of soft tops for Car Magazine, a publication that was very nice to me when I was first starting out. Taken in front of his flat, with a little flash and a handy garden hose, it sure does take me back.

Well, having banged on about my Association of Photographers Awards finalist pictures for ages like some photo desperado, the awards ceremony was last night and, gosh darn it dang and whoopee, this series of shady delights, shot on film this Spring in photogenic California and printed at that haven of shadowy characters, @rapideye.darkroom only went and won a Silver award. Yip a de dee! Whoop whoop! Yahoo! Not that I’m bothered or anything. #aopawards #aop
Sorry to somewhat lower the tone here, but a couple of weeks ago I was sent by the super @gerrylb to a City boardroom for five rather tense minutes in the presence of our once glorious leader, Liz Truss, to take pictures for a piece on her for @newstatesman . Not sure she totally trusted me to be honest. I do rather like the box of Kleenex on the shelf. Not so mad on the crashing the economy malarkey.
Heavy metal thunder, Français style, spotted last month in the sleepy town of Jarnac in Le Charente. Va va voom kind of, sort of, maybe not.
Shot on film and printed by myself at that mighty cavern of the mystical dark arts, @rapideye.darkroom
And last but not least, this picture taken last year of a one-story house of fun is a finalist in the Environment category of this years AOP Awards. I found it somewhere on the road between Wheldrake and Skegness and had to take it’s picture due to it being absolutely marvellous. #bungalow #aopawards
Continuing my AOP Awards showing off fest, this series, finalist in the Spaces category, was taken from my story A Western Wonder that I shot around the sunny state of California earlier this year and which is probably my favourite of the lot. Shot on film and printed at the magical warren of alchemy that is @rapideye.darkroom , it was the first time in over ten years that I’d stuck a film back onto my camera, and the whole process was a marvellous trip down memory lane, with all the messy joy of analogue photography brought back to life. Yes, it’s a bit slow and fiddly compared to the spangly whizziness of digital, but oh the joy of picking up your film and looking at the contacts, followed by hours of tinkering in a pitch black room to finally come away with a print just feels so proper and right. I still love the digital experience and it has its own charms, but a 120 Portra holiday is definitely good for the soul.
