The Greening of the Don These four photographic pairs trace the dramatic transformation of Toronto’s Don Valley from 1982 to today. I created the early photographs with a view camera and the later ones with my iPhone. 1) Once a holding area for fossil fuels, the Portlands is now home to the newly opened Biidaasige Park (designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh). 2) The former cement distribution centre on Lower Bayview has been remade into Corktown Common (Van Valkenburgh). 3) The lands below the Bloor Viaduct, once dominated by dirt bikers, are today part of the Lower Don Parklands, heavily used by joggers and cyclists (TO Parks, Forestry & Rec) 4) Brickworks Park, once a vast quarry that supplied the clay for much of Toronto’s downtown, is now a restored landscape (Claude Cormier) that anchors three of the Don’s ravine systems.

In the late 1980s/early 1990s, the Canadian Centre of Architecture commissioned me (with L. Friedlander and G. James) to photograph the major works of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Almost four decades later, this work is having a banner year. Les Carnets du paysage 45 is dedicated to Olmsted and features my work throughout.

Photography is uplifting! Had a blast today with Colin Dunne's class @yorkmemorialci doing a workshop on analog photography. We shot film with Hawkeye cameras made at Kodak Heights. The building behind them ( formerly Kodak Bldg. 9 and now a public transit hub) is the only reminder of Kodak's 100+ year history in the @mountdennisbia neighborhood. Thanks to the Mount Dennis Library for hosting and @ mountdennisbia for making this happen.

I've just begun an artist's residency at the #IvesLakeFieldStation on the Upper Peninsula of Northern Michigan. The #huronmountainwildlifefoundation hosts natural science researchers and artists throughout the summer months, but because I've arrived at the end of the season, I have the Old Stone House (sleeps 22) to myself. Over the coming weeks, I'll be exploring 24 sq. miles of old-growth/virgin forest, numerous lakes, and most importantly, concentrating on the 12 miles of Lake Superior shoreline as part of my ongoing Great Lakes project. Thank you #HMWF for this opportunity. I am in paradise!

Pleased to be included in a new group show opening at the AGO on Aug. 12th/23 titled, "Cities in Flux". Created by Curatorial Fellow @marinadumount , the exhibition asks: "as cities are constantly being deconstructed and reconstructed, what is lost, what is found, and what remains?" This photograph from 2005 is titled, "Art Photo Studio: Closed Due To Retirement, Toronto." Across from Trinity Bellwoods Park, this storefront studio was converted into the Nadège Patisserie which continues to operate today.
