Did we jinx that goal, Burgey? 👀
🍿 Last week, we sat down with Capi’ Burgey ahead of his 250th game for Union to talk about his journey at the club, his life in Brussels… and scoring more goals. Watch the full video on our YouTube channel.
Over the weekend, Christian Burgess made his 250th appearance for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. His journey to get there is what football dreams are made of.
After being released from the Arsenal academy, he went to the University of Birmingham to study history where he was invited to trial at Middlesbrough. He signed and finished his degree part-time.
Loans at Hartlepool and Peterborough led to a move to Portsmouth in League Two. Five years with Pompey were enough to see him become a fan favourite, as he led them up to League One and established himself as one of the EFL’s best defenders. He eventually left Portsmouth to join RUSG in the Belgian second division with the entire club’s blessings.
His rise in Belgium has coincided with RUSG’s. From promotion to winning cups to winning leagues, and this season, playing Champions League football for the first time aged 34. The journey has been just as impressive as the destination.
