Meet Lenny ❤️ Big thanks to neighborhood guardian angels @todds1336 and @maywho32 for looking out for him while he lived on our block. They fed Lenny every day for two years and helped get him settled in at our place.
Not long after I met Sara, we walked around the topiary park and sat down at one of the stone picnic tables that look as old as the trees. During a particularly hard part of a hard conversation, Sara put a hand on my knee and smiled. It helped me catch my breath for just long enough to keep going. I’ve felt this feeling before, but I feel it best when I’m with Sara. In these moments, I feel at my most brave, vulnerable, and strong. Thank you for choosing me to give all your moments to. Spending time with you is the sweetest gift. Happy bday.

@hilton.als for the New Yorker on Alice Neel’s inclusive eye 🖍 I first heard about this essay in an interview between @tavitulle and @durgapolashi a few years ago and I’ve returned to it many times since. Sentimentality is cute (you could chart your way through my family history by asking me where I got each piece of furniture), but refusing it allowed Alice to deal with real, breathing people. Hilton says elsewhere some people Alice painted couldn’t look at their portrait because it revealed too much. 🖼

Thanks for bringing into my life understanding and light and vulnerability and fearlessness and inspiration and jokes when I’m foggy and the willingness to repeat meals three days a week (only sometimes) and reminders that two people talking over coffee is as good as anything life has to offer. I’m lucky to be by your side.
