🤍✨ **** 2025 was a year full of ups and downs. Just like life itself… There were so many things I will remember with a smile: my work being included in Texas K12 school textbooks; receiving funding from RCSA, NASA, and NSF to support my research group; my student Gwen Herron earning an NSF GRFP fellowship; publishing many papers and getting exciting new observations; and hosting an international conference at Dartmouth… I traveled to many places—Maine, Utah, Toronto, Ottawa, New York, Arizona, California, Spain, and Italy... I made new friends and spent time with my oldest ones. But there were also hard moments. I experienced an early pregnancy loss. We lost my dear mother-in-law. And I won’t even begin to list everything happening in the world ❤️‍🩹Wishing all of us a happy new year, with peace, health, happiness, and plenty of science. 🤍✨✨

💫 ************ Kicking off the new academic year with some exciting news! ✨ Our #SEAMLESS program has been awarded support from the #NSF (National Science Foundation)! 🎉 We’re using #AI to uncover and study the faintest dwarf galaxies — pushing the boundaries of #darkmatter and #galaxyformation research 🚀🌌 And we just submitted a brand-new paper! 📄 With Hubble Space Telescope observations, we present three isolated dwarf galaxies: Pavo (2. photo), Corvus A (3. Photo), and Kamino (last photo). 💫 Fun fact: Dartmouth PhD student Kai Herron named Kamino after the planet missing from the Jedi Archives in #StarWars: Episode II! 💫 @dartmouthartsci

✨ ***** After 17 years, I was lucky to reunite with my classmate @sheydaipek at Bilkent, Turkey. It was wonderful to catch up, meet her students, and also give a seminar at @carleton_u about my research. Here’s to many more reunions! 🌟

Kalbimizde derin bir boşluk bıraktı 💔 **** Closing out another whirlwind summer full of ups and downs… 🌿 In June, we hosted a wonderful and productive conference at Dartmouth, and a new PhD student joined our group—fitting right in from day one 😇 We also welcomed our “DELVE” collaborators to campus for two days of exciting project planning. The summer was full of scientific milestones: the first Rubin observations were released, we attended the Rubin community workshop in Arizona as a group, postdoc Laura Hunter’s major project paper was published, and we released a comprehensive catalog of satellite galaxy candidates around dwarf galaxies 🌌 On the personal side, my mom and sister visited us—it was so nice to be together again 🥰 But the summer also ended on a very sad note as we lost my beloved mother-in-law Zekiye Pakdil, leaving a big hole in our hearts 💔

Some discoveries are so rare, they change the way we see the universe. While working on her PhD, @burcinmutlupakdil discovered a rare, unexplained galaxy—now known as Burçin’s Galaxy. Its structure is so unique that it challenges existing theories of galaxy formation and remains one of the most mysterious discoveries in astrophysics. This project is funded by Lyda Hill Philanthropies. #WomeninSTEM #Astrophysics #Space #Science
