How to process breaths:
1. Compress your lead vocal to taste; this will bring the breaths to their approximate final volume without editing (the compressor will bring up the breaths because they are quieter than the rest of the vocal)
2. Use clip gain to reduce the volume of the lead vocal breaths to taste such that they are audible but smooth and behind the singer's articulation
3. Cut backing vocal breaths completely because they will (usually) clutter the mix and the lead already provides the necessary emotion/naturalness
And voila!
