Not a sexy topic, but these are often overlooked and can easily become an eyesore.

In most cases our goal is to make these disappear. There are exceptions of course, like a restored iron cover in a century home whose craftsmanship deserves its own moment.

The easiest way to achieve a great result when replacing existing covers is to match the colour of your flooring rather than contrasting it, you want your eyes to drift past them, not stop and take notice.

If you’re renovating, planning for an integrated version that is flush with the drywall and can be painted, tiled or wallpapered can give a clean seamless finish, but this should be considered in the early planning phase.

If using custom cabinetry unsightly floor vents can often be moved into the toe kicks.

We updated the fireplace by bumping it out and taking it up to the ceiling to feel more proportionate to the space while adding a new insert and surround for a whole new look. Then we added a rug (size is everything), a stunning new iron coffee table and other small furnishings and decor pieces to bring it all together!

For this pool house revamp we swapped the double doors for a new wood burning fireplace flanked by matching wood storage to create a cozy and inviting lounge area ready for relaxing and entertaining. We refaced the existing facade with new creamy board and batten, minimized the existing columns for more space and removed excess shrubbery to create a space large enough to have a generous dining area.
