This area was lovingly referred to as the "corner pocket" by our team and client. It's a huge, custom built-in banquette with a gorgeous lake view. I've shown a few other shots from this amazing Mid-Century Modern house in Oregon and this zone had the tall task of transitioning between parties or quiet weekends with a book. (Lots of sit tests to make sure the foam was just the right amount of cozy!)
I love old houses but they come with their own challenges. This one had loads of period detail and quirks, but we had to work extra hard to make sure all the new elements looked like they fit in.

I'll admit it--old homes can be tricky! Fitting in all today's modern conveniences takes some creativity but isn't impossible.
Here in this Upper West Side apartment, we took advantage of the window (you know I love natural light!) and centered the sink below it. Instead of a traditional wall-mount mirror, the client embraced a telescoping mirror on an arm off to the side.
Custom cabinetry helped us fit around the building's structure. Clean and simple finishes help keep the look modern and minimal. Hanging pendants in lieu of wall sconces don't compete with other wall mounted fixtures.

Could you work in a kitchen without upper cabinets? It's not right for every kitchen or client, but I like to encourage it in certain circumstances.
This NW Hills kitchen in Portland, Oregon leaned more modern, had other space we could store everyday dish ware, and has an incredible view that upper cabinets would have crowded.
The result is light and airy as a contrast to the dark base cabinets. Plus, the plaster hood and marble backsplash have room to breath and shine instead of being shadowed by a bunch of cabinetry.
