Canada has sat on a world-class compound semiconductor fab for 20 years while global demand for photonics exploded. 🧑💻
Today, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced plans to spin out the NRC’s Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (CPFC). Originally built in 2005, it’s North America’s only end-to-end compound semiconductor facility. This move will turn it into a commercial entity to attract private investment and scale its operations.
Commercializing the CPFC is the right move. Private capital and Canadian control is how you turn an underused strategic asset into the beating heart of a national semiconductor engine.
It’s also step 1 of the plan laid out by @cohere_ai cofounder Ivan Zhang in his Build Canada memo “Seize Canada’s Semiconductor Opportunity” back in November. 🇨🇦

- The by-elections held on April 13 have secured a majority government for the Liberal Party.
