Learn more below! 🦠 "I was born in Tokyo, Japan. At 16, I ventured abroad to study in the UK, where I discovered a passion for science through collaboration with peers worldwide. This led me to earn a BSc in Biology and advanced degrees in Biomedical Science. Seeking broader impact, I earned an MPH, which launched a decade-long journey studying malaria in southern Africa. These experiences reinforced my belief in the power of science, collaboration, and community. Now, as Director of Community Relations at the R³ Center for Innovation in Science Education, I focus on fostering connections and creating an uplifting workplace culture. Outside work, I enjoy family time with my husband, daughter, and our guinea pigs, Buddy and Fuzzy, who keep me grounded and inspired." 🦠 "Since its launch in 2017, the R³ Center for Innovation in Science Education (R³ISE) has developed and shared innovative graduate-level programs, workshops, and resources focused on the core principles of open science and good research practice, namely, the “3Rs.” The “3Rs” refer to Rigorous research conduct, Reproducibility of scientific methods and findings, and Responsibility of scientists to society. Rusk has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Gregg Museum of Art, Esther Klein Gallery, Parsons School of Design, and Willem de Kooning Academy." 🦠 "A brief overview of bioart and digital fabrication, highlighting experimental methods within Rusk's work that merge living systems with machine-based processes, and ways to honor the lives she facilitates. Techniques including CNC foam mold-making, 3D printed blanks, thermoformed molds, are examined alongside microbial patterning and 3D printing with E. coli on agar. Kaitlin has a background in marine biology and brings experience in field research, data collection, and science communication to her role. She is passionate about empowering volunteers to contribute meaningful data that supports the conservation and management of Chesapeake Bay habitats." 🦠 "This presentation will provide an overview of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) and the Chesapeake Bay SAV Watchers program, which engages volunteers in monitoring and identifying this essential habitat that supports native wildlife. Learn more below! 🦠 "Dr. Sylvia Amihere is a computational mathematician and postdoctoral researcher at the @umbclife . She earned her PhD in Mathematics from the @univofalabama in 2024. Her research involves developing advanced time integration methods for complex multiphysics simulations. Her research is supported by grants from institutions including the @nsfgov and the @energy . In addition to developing time integration methods, she is interested in developing numerical methods to accurately calculate biomolecular solvation energies using high-performance computing." 🦠 "Achieving fusion energy requires advanced numerical methods to accurately simulate plasma behavior. However, modeling the complex, nonlinear dynamics of fusion plasmas can be very difficult. This talk explores the critical role of Mathematics in overcoming these challenges. My research focuses on developing advanced time integration methods that significantly improve the stability, accuracy, and efficiency of these complex multiphysics models. By implementing robust, specialized solvers, we can dramatically reduce the computational cost of simulating plasma turbulence.
