There is just something about the light in the North. It is hard to describe it. It speaks for itself. The lack of light in the dark months, the endless light in the summer. All these things gives a feeling of standing very small in a very big landscape. It is as much about the presence of light as the absence of light. And for me it holds a lot of musical inspiration.

Acclaimed cellist Maja Bugge NO/UK) and award-winning pianist Dave Evans (UK) are touring new compositions grown from a collaboration which began in 2023 with the work SORTLAND.
SORTLAND is a meditative portrait of Maja Bugges home city Sortland situated 68 degrees north above the arctic cirle.
Taking inspiration from narratives around movement, nature, heritage, location and belonging, the work uses melody, language, and grooves and experiments with space, stillness and repetition. At times joyful and playful, and at others quiet and vulnerable, this music is not afraid to go to the strangest or quietest of places.

For the past few years I’ve been writing music inspired by the landscape I grew up in around Sortland, above the Arctic Circle.
Sea, wind, silence, seabirds, changing weather. The feeling of standing very small in a very big landscape.
Some of these tunes carry grief for the environmental changes and what is disappearing around us. But there is also a lot of joy in this music. Joy in improvisation, in listening deeply, in two instruments and two cultures trying to find a shared language.
I am so very excited that SORTLAND will be released in August 2026 on Finito Bacalao Records with the wonderful Dave Evans on piano.
