"This is about Scotland. It's about the Philippines, it's about transness, and Scottish experience. This is not about something that's disconnected from the world. It's very much about being part of the world.ā€ For the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia 2026, Bugarin + Castle (@bugarinandcastle ) are representing Scotland, in a project curated by Mount Stuart Trust (@mount_stuart_visual_arts ) and commissioned by Scotland + Venice (@scotlandvisuals ). If shame is social in nature, guilt is almost certainly individual. The release of the Epstein files last year clarified this theory by Dutch social psychologist Geert Hofstede. With the ignominy of being identified publicly in those files as a friend of—or collaborator with—a sex criminal, shame as a social and psychological phenomenon was revealed at its most attenuated. The vicissitudes of shame are a central theme of the multidisciplinary projects by artists by Glasgow-based duo Bugarin + Castle (@bugarinandcastle ) and Aline Bouvy’s (@alinebouvy ) at this year’s Venice Biennale. Read Aimee Walleston's (@aimeewalleston ) opinion piece in full on Ocula.

Bugarin + Castle’s ā€˜Shame Parade’ uses the concept of the parade as a lens to explore complex emotional legacies of shame, sound and voice. Across multiple artworks, the exhibition Shame Parade reimagines centuries-old European shaming rituals, known as rough music, charivari and scampanate, where spectacle, sound, and costume were used to discipline social transgressors. Shame here is not banished, but stretched to new emotional registers where defiance, play, and intimacy coexist. Bugarin + Castle offer no moral resolution. By mapping shame and transformation across continents and through time, they create a politically charged space where power and identity remain in motion. šŸ“£ Scotland + Venice: Bugarin + Castle curated by Mount Stuart šŸ“ Olivolo, Castello 65A 30122, Venice šŸ“… Saturday 9 May to Sunday 22 November 2026 ā° Open Tuesday - Sunday, 10am - 6pm. šŸ“· Installation Images by Dimitri D’Ippolito. Opening tomorrow Shame Parade by Bugarin + Castle for Scotland + Venice is a deeply layered exhibition. One source of inspiration is drawn from illustrations of shaming parades by English painter and satirist William Hogarth (1697 - 1764). References to his work can be found throughout the exhibition including on nail art: talons that can be worn, claimed or removed. šŸ“£ Shame Parade by Bugarin + Castle curated by Mount Stuart Trust for Scotland + Venice šŸ“Olivolo, Castello 59/C 30122, Venice šŸ—“ļø Saturday 9 May to Sunday 22 November 2026. šŸ“ø photo by Charlotte Rogers, nail art by Ivy McGoldrick

Bugarin + Castle Stage a Carnival of Defiance in Venice Presented by Scotland + Venice, Shame Parade by Bugarin + Castle unfolds as a layered exploration of public shaming rituals, reimagined through a contemporary queer and trans lens. Spanning architecture, moving image, sculpture and performance, the project connects geographies from Scotland to the Philippines, weaving together personal histories and diasporic narratives. Drawing on historical practices such as charivari and scampanate, the exhibition transforms these collective acts of discipline into a fluid, performative language. Medieval armour, court transcripts, karaoke ballads and Filipino visual culture converge in a world where past and present continuously intersect. Works such as At Certayne Tymes and Submit to Sound merge mechanical, vocal and embodied elements, while the installation Nocturnal Amusements extends across the space, directly addressing the viewer. Rather than resolving the tension embedded in shame, the artists expand it—turning it into a site of resistance, intimacy and transformation. Through this process, Shame Parade constructs a politically charged environment where identity remains unstable and in motion. Curated by Mount Stuart Trust, the project will continue beyond Venice with a presentation in Scotland in 2027 @scotlandvenice @bugarinandcastle @mount_stuart_visual_arts @labiennale Images: 1. Representing Scotland at the 61st Venice Biennale, Bugarin + Castle (@bugarinandcastle ) are leading a ā€˜Shame Parade’ — foregrounding Scottish archives and Filipino heritage to tease out the unsettling contemporary echoes of the charivari, an Early Modern public shaming ritual. Communities would parade people who'd broken social rules (especially marriage norms) through the streets while jeering and performing mockery. Often, the ritual included cross-dressing and role reversals to publicly humiliate the accused and reinforce social order. Rooted in research, such as an 18th century engraving by William Hogarth depicting the charivari, the duo brings together a re-enactment of the ritual, alongside sculpture and moving image that contends with today’s hostile climate of gender policing, surveillance and so-called ā€˜transvestigations’. Across the exhibition, imagery of queer and trans Filipinos, debris gathered by the artists at Pride parades last year, medieval motifs and iconic Filipino objects such as karaoke machines and a Jeepney collide to shift punishment to play, vulnerability into visibility – and visibility into defiance. Read the full article at the link in bio Bugarin + Castle will represent Scotland at the 2026 Venice Biennale, on view from 9 May to 22 November Read the full column at the link in bio, or in frieze magazine’s Venice Issue - available now. ā±ļø It’s almost time for Shame Parade, Bugarin + Castle’s presentation for Scotland + Venice at La Biennale di Venezia. Here’s a view of At Certayne Tymes, a sculpture that fuses together mechanical, anatomical and vocal elements as part of Bugarin + Castles exhibition; a layered world where historic voices and contemporary culture loop together in scenes that are both defiant and tender. Handmade by the artists in Glasgow alongside a team of fabricators, this work now awaits us in Olivolo, part of the artist’s multi-layered exhibition curated by Mount Stuart Trust. šŸ“ Olivolo, Castello 59/C 30122, Venice šŸ“… Saturday 9 May to Sunday 22 November 2026 šŸŽ„ Video courtesy of Bugarin + Castle #inminorkeys #biennalearte2026

The vicissitudes of shame are a central theme of the multidisciplinary projects by three artists exhibiting in national pavilions at this year’s Venice Biennale, which opens to the public in May. 'Shame Parade', by Glasgow-based duo Bugarin + Castle (@bugarinandcastle ), takes over the Scottish pavilion. Drenched in the pair’s signature dramatic lighting and sour candy hues, the work takes the form of a procession that emulates the historic shaming rituals that were a major aspect of European culture from the medieval period until as late as the mid-1900s. Meanwhile, things take a scatological turn in Aline Bouvy’s (@alinebouvy ) 'La Merde', the artist’s presentation at the Luxembourg pavilion, in which she focuses on the universality of shame as it relates to the processes of defecation. Read Aimee Walleston's (@aimeewalleston ) opinion piece in full on Ocula, link in bio.
