Buffalo was once called the "City of Trees." 🌳
In the late 1800s, over 300,000 trees lined our streets and parks, which were all inspired by Frederick Law Olmsted's vision of a city in a park.
We're bringing that legacy back, one tree at a time.

Trees do more for the environment than you think. 🌳
They help clean our air, fight climate change and reduce flooding/sewer overflows, all while making our blocks cooler, calmer, and more beautiful. 🏡

🌳 Fun Fact Friday!
Did you know Buffalo's street trees act as climate sensors?
Each species blooms in the same order every year — redbuds first, then cherries, then crabapples. Scientists track that sequence to measure climate shifts. When trees bloom earlier than usual, it means our seasons are shifting too. 🌸🌡️
Your street tree is a climate sensor hiding in plain sight. 🌳

🌳🏘️ Fruit Belt is a neighborhood with deep roots and it's ready for more.
Right now, there are over 1,500 empty street tree spots across the Fruit Belt.
Imagine what filling those spots could do:
🌡️ Cool the neighborhood as much as 7,640 air conditioners on a hot summer day
💨 Filter nearly 1,190 lbs of air pollutants every year
💰 Save residents about $76,094 in annual energy costs
🏡 Increase home values by an estimated $73,866 across the neighborhood
More trees mean cleaner air, lower bills, and a healthier Fruit Belt for everyone.

@cityofbuffaloofficial Mayor Sean M. Ryan
🌳 Meet @brittnipatrice one of our Buffalo Street Trees Ambassadors!
By day, Brittni works in public health at the Niagara County Department of Health. In the community, she's a board member of Buffalo WELL, a volunteer with Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, and a member of Vessel Church.
She joined the Tree Ambassador Program to bring environmental education to residents and help expand Buffalo's tree canopy where it's needed most.
In her words: "I want residents to see street trees as a tool for health, not just beauty."
If you see her out in your neighborhood, say hi! She's working to bring more trees, cleaner air, and healthier streets to Buffalo.

Myth Busting Monday 🌳
MYTH: Trees destroy sewer and water pipes.
FACT: Tree roots don't break into healthy pipes. They only enter pipes that are already cracked, leaking, or poorly joined. The real culprit is aging infrastructure, not the trees.
See that cracked pipe? That's where the problem starts. Many cities have sewer systems that are decades old. When pipes fail, roots follow the moisture in. But the damage was already done.
Instead of removing trees, the fix is maintaining and upgrading our pipes. Our street trees cool our neighborhoods, manage stormwater, and clean our air. Let's protect them.

Yesterday, we hit the streets in the Fruit Belt neighborhood. We knocked on doors, distributed over 200 door tags, and had more than 25 conversations with residents about getting more trees on our streets.
Here’s what a lot of people didn’t know — you can request a tree to be planted in front of your home at no cost to you. The City of Buffalo will come plant it and help maintain it for 3 years.
If you live in Fruit Belt (or anywhere in Buffalo), visit our website or call 311 to request your free tree today.

You heard @mayorseanryan — request a tree! 🌳
Last Saturday, we tabled at Better Buffalo Days in Niagara Square, helping people learn how to get a FREE street tree in front of their home and guiding them through the application on the spot. Shoutout to Ambassador @_ron_dixon for keeping the conversations going all day!
Better Buffalo Days is all about taking ownership of our neighborhoods and showing what’s possible when we work together. Trees are a big part of that.
Link in bio to apply. It’s free!

We had a great time tabling at the MAP Seedling Sale 🌱
Thank you to @massaveproject for having us and for bringing the community together around growing and greening Buffalo. We loved connecting with residents and helping folks learn more about getting a tree in front of their home! 🏡

Arbor Day didn't start with beautiful tree-lined streets. It started with bare land and people who decided to change that. In 1872, Nebraska was so barren it was called the "Great American Desert". So communities came together and planted over 1 million trees in a single day. That's the origin of Arbor Day. Not a holiday. A movement.
Buffalo knows that feeling. There are thousands of empty tree pits across our city waiting to be filled. This Arbor Day celebration was a reminder to be part of the change.
