An Update on the Train Depot & the Gazebo in the Downtown Buda Greenbelt
Buda is growing, and so is our downtown — and we want to make sure you're up to date on every step of that story.
This fall, thanks to the generosity of the Bryant family from San Marcos, the City of Buda and the Buda Economic Development Corporation (EDC) welcomed home a piece of local history: the original Buda Train Depot. The Buda EDC has been leading the effort to fund and restore the depot as a retail incubator, a hub that will help local entrepreneurs and small businesses put down roots right in the heart of our historic downtown. The new plaza will include 24 additional downtown parking spots, a spacious covered patio that can host live events and outdoor group performances. In addition, the Depot on Main will provide electrical outlets, a walkable path and sidewalk to support city events like Budafest and outdoor markets. Beautification efforts including trees, landscaping, event lawn and seating will enhance Downtown Buda.
The site plan for the depot and surrounding greenbelt area has been finalized. On Tuesday, May 19, the gazebo that has stood on the greenbelt will be removed as part of this revitalization effort. This decision was not made lightly. We recognize the gazebo has been a beloved part of our community's landscape. Over time and due to the materials used in the original construction, the structure has fallen into significant disrepair and has met its full lifespan. We explored restoration and relocation options with stakeholders earlier this year but ultimately determined relocating and rebuilding would not be feasible given its current condition.
The Depot on Main brings new life to a treasured and historic building as a revitalized area that honors Buda's past while investing in its future, consistent with our City Council's goal of a Historic and Vibrant Downtown.
