Japan sits at the global forefront of selvedge denim treatment and development, revered for its obsessive craftsmanship, heritage fidelity, and technical precision. When American mills modernized, many original shuttle looms were exported to Japan, where they were restored and used to produce narrow-width, self-finished selvedge denim. This preservation of machinery allowed Japanese mills to maintain the irregular textures, tight weaves, and character that define authentic denim. As a result, Japan transformed from a student of American workwear into the world’s benchmark for premium selvedge production.
