Gutted to learn of the loss of one of my heroes, The great Rafael Ithier: an absolute icon, who was a founding member of not one but two of the most monumental groups in all of Afro Caribbean music, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico and Cortijo y su Combo. Descanse en paz, maestro.
Absolutely gutted. One of my desert island top 5 favorite artists ever and a huge inspiration on me and every musician I know. Who else can you think of who drops an album and immediately EVERYBODY changes the way they play? Soon as Brown Sugar came out you had a million copycats biting his style. He comes back out with Voodoo and instantly had all of us switching our style up again. Black Messiah was so vital when it dropped. We needed him then. We need him now. Fly high, D. We love you and are forever grateful.
