Just under a month after I turned forty, we moved to New York. For the past six years, I've been developing my voice as a stand-up comedian. Earlier tonight, I did a spot in The Joke Lab Show (thank you, @laurenlogi ; that was fun) in Little Italy.
August will be eight years since we moved here, and there are just some places, because I didn't grow up here, I usually take a few pictures when I'm there. I'm genuinely having trouble remembering the last time I was in Little Italy. I'm planning the next step in this crazy trip of a life, and it's something that really brings things together. I shared a similar idea a few months ago, when I went to the same bookstore to get my signed copy of Jennie Garth's book: when the opportunity presents itself to touch hands (figuratively) w something that means something to me, I'm going for it.
A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to return to Bookends to get my signed copy of Jamie Lynn Sigler's new book. I've been fighting off a little something, and I didn't post about it until now.
The Sopranos is just one of my favorite things ever. Full stop. When we got Max, one of my first moves was to watch The Sopranos, the entire series, on there, which makes no sense because I've had it on DVD for decades. Anyway, when I was making plans to get Jennie's book, I saw that Jamie would be there in early May, and I put it on my calendar.
In the aftermath of the book signing, I finished the book in two days. I thought it was a beautiful book, and I enjoyed reading it. Highly recommended!!!!!
Jamie greeted us, said a few words, and then we lined up to get our books signed. When it was my turn, I told her I was a high school teacher in The Bronx, but that coming up to Ridgewood to get the chance to tell her what a huge fan I am and how much The Sopranos means to me was a no brainer. I also told her that she was in one of the greatest Lonely Island videos of all time, and that I loved her podcast with Rober Isler. Finally, I told her I had read the first thirty pages of her book while we were waiting, and that I couldn't wait to read the rest.
While I was talking w her, I will admit I got a little emotional because it was just a thrill to get to express how much of a fan I was and what getting to meet her meant to me (and if you know me, that's kind of my m.o. these days). I swear I'm not making this up, but I saw her eyes mist up a little when I acknowledged I didn't expect to get emotional, but I was just so pleased to get to talk with her. She was lovely and kind, and it was genuinely the best celebrity encounter I've ever had.
I'm telling you: if you get the hands to touch hands with the things that are important to you, and you have the resources to do so, you should go for it!
We put on a show. Jokes were made. Laughs happened. Thank you to all the comedians. Thank you to the audience. Thank you to the @whiskeycellarnyc for housing another Just Edgy Enough Comedy Show. We have another one there this coming Sunday at 5pm.
