As Bryan Cranston said, "Being a day player is the hardest work an actor will ever do." And he's right. You must know your craft inside and out to steady the nerves for your day in front of the cameras. But this time it was a huge honor to be filling the shoes of legendary journalist Pierre Salinger, if only for a day in this powerful drama headed by Colin Firth.#actingtips #dayplayer #methodacting

DON’T ACT LIKE YOU’RE ACTING. This weekend my acting students will be presenting their scenes one final time. So for them, and for you, I offer this solution to the problem in every actor’s gut: how do I take it to the next level and not feel fake, phony, hammy - all those things that our gut telling us that we’re not good enough? Paul Newman gives the answer. ALERT: Method Acting talk coming up. Hams: look away. When we reject the idea that it means we must keep up the accent during the whole run making everyone else’s lives unbearable, when we have the courage to “live truthfully under imaginary circumstances” the price we pay is that we must live, think and do the things we that do in real life - EXACTLY THE WAY WE DO IT in real life, and we totally give up control of how the audience is going to perceive it. Hammy actors can’t do this - they’re either ignorant of this process, or they’re too afraid or they’re too lazy to contemplate this wonderful, life-affirming way of working. So, when you “play an action” (a transitive verb going from me to you), then genuinely, honestly, 100% full out, play the action. Don’t act like you’re playing the action, don’t fake it, don’t pretend, don’t show us, don’t check it off your list of actions in your mind — actually, honestly do it. If your scene calls you to CHARM, or to PROBE, or to OBLITERATE, do it. All of this is happening to your character in real time (indeed there’s no such thing as a character anyway). You’ve never been in this situation before, you’ve never thought these thoughts before, you’ve never chosen this course of action with your scene partner, and you have no idea what you’re about to say. Do that and you’ll pull your audience in, hypnotize them, and if it’s a comedy they’ll laugh more boisterously, and if it’s a dramatic moment, you will deeply move them. And that’s what we actors want to do anyway, right? The only way we become good actors, is to stop trying to be good actors in the eyes of our audience. Only then will they say, “they’re good”. They won’t know why, but you will. #actingclass #acting #actingskills #actingclass #theatreeducation #actingtips #StudentActors #actingworkshop

The Weinerman Years! This is why we show up for any casting. The ad agency headhunted me and I turned them away, convinced I could not play a superhero. I finally put my classical acting aspirations aside and got involved in a phenomenally successful ad campaign of TV & Radio ads, parade appearances, hockey and baseball games, and store appearances across five states. A very profitable wacky gig for three years.

The poet nailed us actors: As in life, what I direct my attention to, and what I ignore (which is the hard part), activates my Inner Life so that I can choose Actions that get me to my Objective: to be good, happy, joyous, free, loving, tolerant, patient, productive, useful & non-judgmental. One day I'll reach my Objective and move onto the next Beat. Or is the joy in the journey? #ActingCoach #AuditionPrep #ActingClass #TheaterEducation #ActingTips #StudentActors #ActingWorkshop #DramaTeacher #AuditionTechnique #PerformanceSkills #ActingAdvice #TheaterTraining #ActingSuccess #StagePresence #ActingJourney #AuditionPrep #ActingClass #TheaterEducation #ActingTips #StudentActors #ActingWorkshop #DramaTeacher #AuditionTechnique #PerformanceSkills #ActingAdvice #TheaterTraining #ActingSuccess #StagePresence #ActingJourney

You must have Spontaneity: your character has NO IDEA that they're about to do a monologue. They have no idea what they're about to say, no idea of the point that they want to make, and they have no idea how the other person is going to react. And it puts them off balance. Try these tactics to get you into this state of spontaneity. #monologues #ActingClass #ActingCoach #AuditionPrep #ActingClass #TheaterEducation #ActingTips #StudentActors #ActingWorkshop #DramaTeacher #AuditionTechnique #PerformanceSkills #ActingAdvice #TheaterTraining #ActingSuccess #StagePresence #ActingJourney #DramaSchool

Need help making self tapes less grueling? Part of the solution is where you put your focus: if it's on the wall in front of you, yes, you will be weirded out and self-conscious (which shows up as tension). Solution? Put your focus on INNER OBJECTS and your mind will then be working as it does all the time and you'll feel more natural. That's why I call it NeuroActing. #Selftape #Selftapestruggles #ActingClass #ActingCoach #AuditionPrep #ActingClass #TheaterEducation #ActingTips #StudentActors #ActingWorkshop #DramaTeacher #AuditionTechnique #PerformanceSkills #ActingAdvice #TheaterTraining

We actors can only work in the present moment. It’s a challenge. But it feels good to not have to replay the last performance, or yearn for the audience’s love. I find this tactic helps, from Marcus Aurelius, Roman philosopher and emperor. I'm trying to make it a way of seeing Life. “We should remember that even Nature’s inadvertence has its own charm, its own attractiveness. The way loaves of bread split open on top in the oven; the ridges are just by-products of the baking, and yet pleasing, somehow; they rouse our appetite without our knowing why. Stalks of wheat bending under their own weight. And other things. If you look at them in isolation there’s nothing beautiful about them, and yet by supplementing nature they enrich it and draw us in. And anyone with a feeling for nature - a deeper sensitivity - will find it all gives pleasure. Even what seems inadvertent. He’ll find the jaws of live animals as beautiful as painted ones of sculptures. He’ll look calm at the distinct beauty of old age in men, women, and at the loveliness of children. And other things like that will call out to him constantly - things unnoticed by others. Things seen only by those at home with Nature and its works.” Break a leg.
