ACQUISITION NEWS! ✨ I am very excited to announce my first museum acquisition! The @haggertymuseum Haggerty Museum of Art, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has acquired four Journal Series weavings: “12.29.23”, “12.31.23-1.1.24”, “8.31.24”, and “9.1.24” for their permanent collection. I want to thank the Haggerty’s Collection Committee and Director John McKinnon @jmckin2 for their generosity and support for my work on the loss of my grandparents. I want to express my gratitude to curators @christopherjobs and @grace.l.ebert of @thisiscolossal for their incredible support and for inviting me to exhibit alongside such incredible artists in the No One Knows All It Takes exhibition. Their kindness and willingness to share my work with so many others who are also affected by caregiving and the loss of a loved one is something I am forever grateful for. These journals hold deep significance for me as 12.29.23 and 12.31.23- 1.1.24 were created after the passing of my Papa George. And journals 8.31.24 and 9.1.24 were created after my Mema passed away. 12.29.23, 2023 14 in. x 10.25 in. Feelings of love, loss, and nostalgia are deeply interwoven in the practice of artist Bryana Bibbs (@bryanabibbs ). While caring for two simultaneously ailing grandparents in her Chicago home, Bibbs chronicled the periods before and after their deaths in weavings. Just as one might pick up a pencil and paper to write through difficult and overwhelming feelings, she incorporated their clothing and beloved objects into her work, directly confronting the materials that once filled their days by interlacing them with threads and fabrics. In a new conversation released in conjunction with the Colossal-curated exhibition ‘No One Knows All It Takes’ at the Haggerty Museum of Art (@haggertymuseum ), Christopher Jobson (@christopherjobs ) speaks with Bibbs about finding catharsis in making and learning to understand how we respond to trauma. Read the conversation on Colossal, link in bio.

Journal Series Entries, 8.27.20 to 8.31.20 … Since 2020, the JOURNAL Series has been a daily weaving practice that documents time, location, and daily observations—both mental and physical—through the use of everyday objects, materials, and fiber. So far, the series has captured moments from the COVID-19 pandemic, Bibbs’s travels, and the caregiving and recent passing of her grandparents. To date, there are over 230 journal entries. These four journals were made from August 27 to August 31, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. In these four weavings, I used a frame loom, a spinning wheel, and a drum carder to spin different fibers and textures. These weavings were some of the few where I really started to explore with wool nepps and flax. Experimenting with the grab bags full of random bits of fiber was really exciting for me, as I enjoyed seeing all of the different colors interact with one another and sometimes make really interesting combinations that I hadn’t thought of before. … 8.27.20 17.5 in. x 8.5 in.
