Step Three Of My Process For Installing Butt Hinges
For this step I’m back to hybrid woodworking to remove the material to fit the hinge. With my layout lines marked, I come in and lightly set the shoulders with a chisel. I then make a very slight relief paring back to the shoulder again with the chisel. These shoulders allow a reference surface when I come back at the end and chop the final waste away.
I switch to a router to remove a majority of the waste. Here I am using a palm router with a quarter inch bit. This changes depending on the size of the hinge. I want to get as close to the line as I can leaving about a sixteenth of an inch to chop away later. In this step it is critical to never take too much.
With the majority removed I come back in with a chisel and chop my shoulders firmly. This allows me to come in and remove the tiniest bit of the bottom of the mortise with a router plane for that perfect flush fit.

Step Two:
Installing Butt Hinges
This series will be how I currently like to install butt hinges.
With the tools set I begin marking out the hinge placement on the wood. I will do a video of how I set each tool. I’m lucky to have two marking gauges which means I can set both and not have to adjust them during the process.
These @brussohardware are machined so nicely it’s a joy to work with them. I start by setting the hinge on my layout marks and marking both sides of the hinge with my @will_stelter marking knife. When I do this I use the hinge to establish 90 on the edge. Because of this I will have to extend my marking line which I show at the end as the barrel of the hinge gets inset halfway into the panel or edge.
With the sides set I can now mark the top of the hinge and how deep I need to set it with marking gauges. To extend my initial side mark lines I use a sliding rule placing the marking gauge into my scribe line and sliding the rule to it.
Once completed I now I have the placement of my hinge and can confidently work towards my lines for a tight fit.
