For nearly a decade,
@brunodrums has been the rhythmic backbone behind Mitski, translating her ever-shifting musical world to the stage and studio. His philosophy is simple but powerful: serve the song first, let the groove follow, and everything else falls into place. That mindset was on full display during the recording of Mitski’s latest album, when Bruno and longtime collaborator Patrick Hyland tracked drums and bass live in a home studio in Nashville. Kits were mixed, matched, and “Frankensteined” together to find the perfect feel for each track. From explosive grooves to subtle Brazilian-inspired patterns, Bruno’s work gives Mitski’s songs a pulse that is both precise and human. I caught up with Bruno in New Jersey at an intimate pop-up show Mitski had before her run of residencies. That night, I had the chance to speak with him about his approach to the new album, the grooves, the rhythms, and how he shapes the songs from behind the kit.
