He shares the full arc of his own story, from 25 ayahuasca sessions to the Hot Spring Hypothesis, why he decided to go public about the role psychedelics played in his science, and where MINDS is headed as we build the research infrastructure for this work.
He also puts it plainly: “We’re leaving all this genius on the table. And it isn’t necessarily that psychedelics are the only tools we can use to unlock it, but it’s the broader focus on cultivating and nurturing that next generation coming up who carry these capacities.”

Belatedly posting my profile (my first ever profile!) of @brucedamer , the computer scientist, psychonaut and astrobiologist who hallucinated the origin of life.
During an ayahuasca trip, Damer *became* the first protocell and remarkably his visionary insights led to an actual scientific breakthrough and a paradigm shift in the origin of life research field.
Psychedelics, he told me, shape the lens of the mind. ‘Suddenly new things come into view.’

Bruce Damer had the audience under his Gandalf spell. He was giving a keynote speech in a grand hall at Breaking Convention, a psychedelic-consciousness conference in Exeter, England, in April 2025. Tall and slender, very much bearded, and sporting two large gold hoop earrings, one on either side, Damer looked exactly like you would expect a sexagenarian psychedelic professor to look. A boyishly enthusiastic speaker, he said a psychedelic trip had transported him through time to face a deep trauma.
