What do we, the living, do to remember those who have gone before us? Kaiolena Tacazon ‘26 examines this question in her senior thesis exhibition, which incorporates photography, installation, printmaking, and other mediums in order to create a physical manifestation of her grief. In her practice, Tacazon identifies and captures fleeting moments in order to preserve them, and here presents them in a space that is at once inviting and deeply personal. The A-List series highlights Brown student artists through showcases of works on view at the List Art Building. Stay tuned to hear from more amazing student artists! #BrownArts #BAIStreetTeam #BrownUniversity #SceneAtBrown #ArtsAtBrown

Please join us for the final Artist Talk of the Spring semester. Says Woolfalk ‘01 will be in attendance on Wednesday, April 15th at 6pm. “Saya Woolfalk (Japan, 1979) is a New York based artist who uses science fiction and fantasy to re-imagine the world in multiple dimensions. With the multi year projects No Place, The Empathics, and ChimaTEK, Woolfalk has created the world of the Empathics, a fictional race of women who are able to alter their genetic make-up and fuse with plants. With each body of work, Woolfalk continues to build the narrative of these women’s lives, and questions the utopian possibilities of cultural hybridity. Her many public commissions include The Coretta Scott King Peace and Meditation Garden, which was dedicated at the King Center in Atlanta in April 2023. Other commissioned works include murals for Penn Station, the Metropolitan Transit Authority; a public school in Queens for the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs School Construction Authority; and a basketball court in Marcus Garvey Park. A comprehensive, traveling survey of works by the artist is currently on view at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York through September of 2025. Works by Saya Woolfalk are in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Studio Museum in Harlem; the Chrysler Museum of Art; the Mead Museum of Art; the Everson Museum of Art; the Weatherspoon Art Museum; the Hunter Museum of American Art; and many other institutions. Woolfalk earned her B.A. in visual art and economics from Brown University in 2001 and her MFA in sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2004. Her many honors and awards include a Fulbright grant to study in Brazil (2005); a residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem (2007); and the 2023 Anonymous Was a Woman award.”

How can the unpredictabilities of life be encapsulated in the story of a star, a string, and a scarf? ✨ In his senior thesis exhibition “Soul Scarf,” Ren Long ‘26 tells the story of a star named Soul through an array of digital and physical works, from a handmade book to digital animation. Long uses his wide-ranging art practice to tell stories in a variety of formats, all of which are full of stars, colors, and a sense of wonder at life’s infinite possibilities. The A-List series highlights Brown student artists through showcases of works on view at the List Art Building. Welcome to The A-List! ✨🎨 A new series from BAI's Street Team highlighting Brown student artists through showcases of works on view at the List Art Building, which rotate throughout the academic year. For this installment we meet Melanie Michael ‘26 and view her senior thesis exhibition “Madder,” which transforms lace-knit squares into intricate oil paintings that cover entire canvases in shades of red. The monumentality of her work makes clear the distinctions between knitted pieces that might at first appear similar, and reveals how a knitter’s intentionality is present in every stitch. Just how many extraordinary complexities can you find in a single piece of knitwork? #BrownArts #BAIStreetTeam #BrownUniversity #SceneAtBrown #ArtsAtBrown
