Please join us for Rooted in Love, a Black History Month and Valentine’s Day–themed collaborative event that brings together sustainable art, generative writing, and community-centered dialogue. This hands-on workshop and panel experience centers love, care, and relationships as foundational elements of environmental justice within Black communities. The evening will begin with a sustainable art-making and generative writing workshop, followed by a faculty and community panel discussion exploring how care, education, and community relationships shape the future of Black environmental justice. This event creates space for reflection, creativity, and meaningful conversation that bridges art, history, and environmental action. The event is presented by Sustainability Equity Alliance at Columbia University and Black Girl Environmentalists. Food, drinks, and treats from local Black-owned restaurants and vendors will be provided. All art materials will be supplied for the workshop, and attendees can also expect special community goodies. I come home from time away in my favorite place—a home that always feels perpetually brand new and place of personal memory. My time in Salvador at the start of Black History Month returned me to the waters of devotion, divination of iemanja and in the endless continuum of Blackness, Black Resistance, and a Black earth. Salvador I go slow, then slower. This Black world has the time, patience, grace, and tenderness I often struggle to find navigating western life’s demands. I find it in the way your grandma’s palm oil soup tastes like mine, and another’s Black life miles away. I find it in how ancestors survived more than just disconnection but unrelenting preservation of self, connection to the land, and a spirituality that hollers, claps, drums, and exhales.
