We are part of a Pride campaign that is now on live TV across Europe. This was filmed last year, and it feels a bit surreal and dissonant in contrast to the uptick in anti-trans legislation and global attacks on LGBTQ+ rights.
When we were filming, a Gen X Italian couple talked about how they understand that younger generations have valid critiques of the ways pride is coopted, but they grew up during the AIDS crisis -- when public representation didn't exist for most, and criminalization was the norm. So, being able to share their relationship still feels new and important, as it shows possibilities to isolated youth, to those in the closet, to their past selves.
We feel similarly. Neither of us grew up in home environments where being gay or trans was an option, and definitely not celebrated.
The rightwing governments want a return to the isolation and fear of the 1980s, they want us back in the closets, the prisons, or the grave. Fuck that. Happy Pride. 🌈🩵💛💚🧡🩷💜🤎
