It looks like our main website (brokencupteahouse.com) is down and may not be fixed for the next 10 days... 🥲
Good news is that, in the meantime, our online store and reservation system for the tea room are both still up and running on their own respective sites.

Located in Kendall Square, Broken Cup Teahouse is a traditional Asian-style teahouse dedicated to high-quality, single-origin, and vintage teas. The teahouse operates by reservation only, offering a seated service designed to slow the experience down and focus on tea as a cultural practice.
Teas are served without milk or sweeteners to preserve their natural character. In addition to the in-person experience, Broken Cup also offers curated teas for purchase online and hosts private tea tastings for guests interested in learning more about the history and craft behind traditional tea. 🍃✨🍵

In honor of International Women's Day, I'd like to introduce you to a piece of art in our tea room that I love: 「春闺倦读图」aka "A Painting Of A Lady Reading In Her Chamber In Springtime," a print of an 18th century painting by Leng Mei (冷枚). The painting features a young aristocratic woman in a relaxed and leisurely posture, with a book in her hand. The book, in fact, is open to a page with a poem written by another woman, Zi Ye (子夜) from the Jin Dynasty.
It's a rare thing, I think, to see women - especially Asian women - depicted in art as having agency, as embodying both object AND subject, seeing AND being seen. Though she's being observed, she appears so relaxed, completely in her element, and with a smile that rivals the Mona Lisa's. In fact, she seems to be looking at the viewer directly, meeting and challenging their gaze or perhaps their judgment of her, in a quiet way. She is at peace and at leisure, enjoying art made by another woman.
I think there’s a kind of beauty in the lineage here: A woman writes a poem. Another woman reads it more than a thousand later. And today, we sit beneath the image of that moment, drinking tea and looking back at her looking at us.
Women making art. Women enjoying art. Women passing it forward.
Art moves through time this way, woman to woman, hand to hand, gaze to gaze. Today we cherish, inherit, and quietly ride the coattails of the beauty, creativity, work, and leisure that the women before us made possible. Happy International Women's Day!
