#Repost @thebroadmuseum ・・・ #Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the US in 1865, when news finally reached Texas of the Emancipation Proclamation, issued by Lincoln 2 ½ years prior. Nearly 100 years later, Norman Lewis’s painting, America the Beautiful, (1960) evokes the KKK, while its title raises the contradiction between the ideal America and its reality. In the face of continued injustice, the notion resonates today. See Lewis's painting today in Soul of a Nation #AtTheBroad! Click the link in our bio to reserve tickets. (📸: @timothynorris )

#Repost @thebroadmuseum ・・・ IN MEMORIAM: Broad collection artist Robert Therrien, the sculptor who embraced the world with a child’s-eye perspective, has passed away at the age of 71. Robert Therrien was one of the first Los Angeles artists collected by Eli and Edythe Broad. Therrien’s objects seem very familiar. They are ordinary things – tables, chairs, keyholes, snowmen, plates, and pitchers – but transported, with care, across media, scales, and environments. These objects derive from the artist’s experiences, yet rather than being personal symbols, they are products of a collective memory that he shares with us. His objects are both new and strikingly nostalgic; each one wears Therrien’s sense of time like a new set of clothes. Therrien’s Under the Table (1994) is currently on view. This sculpture is based on an actual table that resided in Therrien’s studio kitchen. Founding Director Joanne Heyler often sat at this very table during her visits to the artist’s studio, where they sat and chatted. Robert Therrien, Under the Table, 1994. Wood, metal and enamel. Broad Collection artist Ellsworth Kelly was born on this day in 1923. From @thebroadmuseum : Kelly "was willing to drop traditional painting’s insistence on the square or rectangular frame to pursue departures of vision and experience." • 📷 Blue Red #EllsworthKelly 1968 Oil on canvas, two joined panels 73 3/4 x 161 1/8 in.
