JOIN OUR GARDENING CLUB
Our group of gardening volunteers meet on the first Saturday of every month from 12.30 to 2.30pm to plant bulbs, flowers, fruit bushes, prune, tend the herb bed. We aim to help improve the biodiversity of the park, making Windmill Gardens a welcoming place for visitors and nature.
Tools, gardening gloves, drinking water and light refreshments are provided, no experience necessary. If youâd like to help out, just show up on the day.
Windmill Gardens is a well-used park that first gained a Green Flag Community Award back in 2015. The award has been retained each year since then.
The childrenâs playground was recently refurbished with new equipment and we are hoping to add more recreational facilities for teenagers. Graphics by Chris Patton.

HISTORY, ON THIS DAY INâŠ
Pen and ink drawing of Brixton Windmill by Karl Wood (1888-1958). He travelled the UK on a bicycle with the goal of painting pictures of all the windmills in the country.
His aspiration was to publish a book, âThe Twilight of the Millsâ, but he never completed this ambition. Itâs estimated that he visited around 3,000 windmills during his lifetime and drew or painted over 1400 including Brixton Windmill.
The Mills Archive Trust has recently posted an online exhibition titled âDrawing the Wind: Karl Woodâs Windmill Pilgrimageâ
Karl Woodâs drawing is contrasted with a photo of Brixton Windmill from 1925. By this time, the sails had been removed and a platform constructed around the cap. The
modular mill was being used to grind flour.
