Yesterday, I had the immense pleasure of doing a product shoot for Bellsong Creamery, a dairy enterprise under the auspices of Bella Luna Farms
@bellalunafarms . Styled by the incredible
@bridgetkmeyer , we spent the day foraging, harvesting and learning about and working with all the cheeses made by cheese master Meghan McKenna
@cheesemakermeghan .
I have always loved photographing food but light and tech was where it stopped. Working with food goes SO MUCH MORE beyond just making a pretty table or plate. Watching Bridget (a chef in her own right) and her assistant Angela work a scene, the meticulous thought and eye that go behind every single element, Bridget’s depth of knowledge with regards to the mood, temp and behavior of the ingredients with which she was working. It was fascinating, humbling and eye-opening.
I have been a storyteller for almost 30 years, and a professional photographer for 18. Through these almost two decades, the biggest realization of all is that I have the easiest job compared to everyone else in any project, whether it’s a wedding, a styled shoot, a commercial gig, headshots etc. And yet, photographers seem to have a LOT of “power” just because we understand light and composition, have the gear, and get a moment. It’s the other artists and collaborators that make it possible for us to take a pretty picture. Unless one is doing street or journalism? Someone else is helping us look good.
Let’s not forget that.
THANK YOU Pam of
@bellalunafarms for always trusting me and throwing all these opportunities my way, Meghan for making all that delicious cheese, Bridget and Angela for your brilliance, and the baby goats for ending our day so sweetly.
Let’s do it again soon some time!
