A LEGO fidget build #brickbending
I’d seen fidget toys like this, and I’d suspected I could build a (large) LEGO version. I used a four layer technique because my tan bricks were limited and I wanted maximum hexagons. Five layers would be sturdier, and just as fun. 😁 Also the smallest hexagon is under a LARGE amount of stress. I normally wouldn’t work that small, but I knew the whole design would look better if I could pull it off. An 11 or 13 stud side is much easier to build and has much less risk of stress lines or cracking.

The secret art of LEGO origami? #brickbending
As the word origami means ‘folding paper’ it doesn’t exactly fit. Perhaps we could call this ‘brick folding’—one of the many lost brick bending arts.
This build primarily consists of two simple patterns of 1x4 plates that are mirror images of each other. When you interweave them together with hinged connections they are able to tightly fold up, and then expand, all fairly easily. I’ve added extra bits around the outside edges just help foster the illusion of squareness in its compact form.

A very precarious LEGO build #brickbending
2400 standard parts—just two kinds of LEGO plates (part numbers 2540 & 48336). Insanely fragile and just barely balanced enough to stand. I actually didn’t think I could film its reconstruction, but extremely happy it worked out. Not keen to try filming this one again. 😅

There are SOOO many variations on this design—and many can become the foundation for much more spectacular builds. I call this particular one LEGO Sawtooth 16-8-2: 16 segments that are 8 studs long and 2 studs high. An inelegant, but technically accurate name 😁

Word of warning: different color LEGO elements behave differently. An attempt to build this in bright light orange met with total failure (that color just lacks good clutch power). It’s all about experimentation and seeing what works.
