Four years ago I wrote the following words, and they remain true: today is Lea’s Day
.
Today was Lea’s day.
Today was everything we fought so hard for fourteen years to avoid, but when it came, we embraced today with the honesty, love and courage that Lea deserved.
In the dark, small hours of this morning, just before sunrise, my mother held her one hand, and I held the other. It was quiet. It was beautiful. It was real.
We watched for her last breath while whispering to her. We whispered to her that she was loved, we whispered to her that we were there and we whispered to her that she was safe. She was not alone. It was time.
We held Lea’s hand today just as she had held ours countless times. In only 46 years Lea had somehow managed to impact thousands of people with her infectious spirit. We all felt it. We all knew it the instant we met her, and we all cherished it.
Though Lea faced brutal complications from leukemia and a bone marrow transplant, she woke everyday with a smile and quiet encouragement for those around her. She was beautiful. She was real.
Lea’s life was defined by her tenacious spirit, her gentle love and a constant commitment to the well being of others. Lea’s life was never defined by cancer.
She was my big sister and my best friend who guided me through every facet of life. She was a mother, a daughter, a wife and an amazing example of how to truly live with grace, purpose, humor and gratitude.
Lea lived her life on her own terms, and today, she left on her own terms.
Today is Lea’s day.

Happy Birthday to my big sister @leawedge ! I celebrated Lea today by hiking her favorite local loop in cold and cloudy conditions. When I got to where her ashes are located (Lea’s Lookout), the heavens just opened up and a huge, bright double rainbow appeared. It was incredible, and I just stood there for twenty minutes getting soaked and enjoying the beauty of it all (video/photos next). I am so grateful to be her little brother - she taught me so much about kindness, compassion, bravery and love.
I carry her in my heart every day, but today was extra special to be alone with our pup, on the mountain connecting with her spirit, and feeling her close to me. Words can never fully express the joy that Lea brought to me and those around her - but I know she is still with us, now beaming rainbows down upon us whenever the storms return. We are so lucky to be alive and to carry her spirit with us as best we can. Happy birthday beautiful! ❤️😍
